The Jasper Ocean Terminal is necessary to meet
the growing demands of the global shipping community and represents
the most promising port expansion in the southeast in terms of
minimizing impacts to health and the environment. Both the Charleston
and Savannah Port expansions have been proposed to accommodate
the larger ships that are expected to travel through the Panama
Canal by 2014 but come with significant and complicated air and
water quality issues.
Due to its proximity to the open water
and the fact that the Port is being designed from scratch,
many of these issues are of less concern at the Jasper site.
The Jasper Ocean Terminal will have rail access that will reduce
harmful air emissions and avoid traffic congestion. The Jasper
Ocean Terminal is located much closer to the open water than
existing port facilities on the Savannah and will avoid additional
impacts to almost 10 miles of the Savannah River.
Economically
and environmentally, we need a Jasper Port Now!
